While a key safe is mandatory among government and commercial buildings due to fire code, it may not be as customary for residents. The Clayton Fire Department is partnering with the Knox® Company to unlock information about the valuable resource and its lasting impact on lives and property in critical moments when seconds matter.
The Knox® HomeBox™ is a durable, rapid access system that consists of a wall mount and door hanger, weighing less than four pounds. It holds one set of keys to your home, which the Clayton Fire Department can retrieve if no one is able to open the doors.
“We’re removing obstacles and gaining quicker entry during accidents, disasters, and emergencies to provide aid, protect your pets, and prevent further damage to your property,” says Fire Chief David Ranes. “In addition, we’re protecting our own and minimizing our risk for injuries when responding to incidents.”
There is an initial investment to secure the Knox® HomeBox™. The price tag is around $175 for both components, but after purchase, the Clayton Fire Department offers free installation to homeowners who live within the Town’s limits and the Claytex Fire District and places a sticker on the door to notify first responders. It’s the only agency in the Town with a primary set of keys to all Knox® HomeBoxes™, which assist with admission upon arrival and fastening before leaving.
“We’re talking about a couple thousand dollars in potential repairs from forced entry – plus, containing any additional fire and water damage,” says Ranes. “But the biggest reward is the potential to save someone’s life.”
The Clayton Fire Department joins more than 15,000 police, fire, and EMS agencies who work with the Knox® Company to connect people with vital technology and promote safety in communities across the country.
“Anyone would benefit from having one,” says Ranes. “It doesn’t hurt to have another built-in line of defense for your protection, especially if you’re living alone, experiencing health complications, or entering your Golden Years.”
